Chinese Robots Break Usain Bolt's 100-Meter Record at Beijing Competition

Usain Bolt’s 100-meter world record stood for 17 years. It took Chinese robotics companies less than a day at a competition in Beijing to beat it.

At the World Humanoid Robot Games on Saturday, Tiangong Ultra, built by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds. That’s nearly two-tenths of a second faster than Bolt’s 2009 record of 9.58 seconds. Honor’s Lightning robot came in second at 9.47 seconds, still faster than any human has ever run.

Tiangong Ultra also broke the 400-meter record during the competition, though specific times weren’t disclosed in initial reports.

What It Means

This isn’t just a publicity stunt. The World Humanoid Robot Games is where companies building commercial humanoid robots demonstrate their progress on fundamental locomotion challenges. Running fast requires solving balance, power management, and real-time control problems that directly translate to useful work in factories, warehouses, and other commercial settings.

The fact that two different Chinese companies both built robots capable of superhuman sprint speeds, and that they’re doing it in a competitive event rather than controlled lab conditions, tells you something about where the industry is. This is production-ready technology, or close to it.

Honor, better known for smartphones, has been investing heavily in robotics as part of China’s broader push into AI and automation. The company’s entry into humanoid robotics with a competitive platform signals that this isn’t a side project. They’re building real capabilities.
